Jan Suraaj Explores Delhi Chapter as Prashant Kishor to Be Felicitated on Sunday for Bankipur Win

New Delhi: The Jan Suraaj Party is exploring the possibility of expanding its political activities to Delhi, with supporters in the national capital planning to raise the proposal with party founder Prashant Kishor during a felicitation event on Sunday.

The event is being organised by Biharis living in Delhi who are associated with Jan Suraaj. The gathering is primarily planned to felicitate Kishor for his recent victory in the Bankipur Assembly bypoll in Bihar, but party supporters are also seeking his approval to establish a formal presence in Delhi, according to PTI.

Support grows for a Delhi chapter

Kumar Shantanu, a member of the Jan Suraaj core committee and a Delhi University faculty member, said there was a demand among party supporters in Delhi for the organisation to establish a chapter in the capital.

“There is a strong demand from people associated with Jan Suraaj in Delhi that the party establish a presence here,” Shantanu said, while adding that Sunday's programme was primarily a felicitation event for Kishor.

He indicated that any decision to contest elections in Delhi would come only after the party assesses its prospects in the capital.

For now, there is no formal announcement that Jan Suraaj will contest an upcoming Delhi election. The proposal is at the stage of discussions among supporters and the party leadership.

Prashant Kishor's Bankipur victory

The proposed expansion comes after Kishor secured his first electoral victory as a candidate in the Bankipur Assembly bypoll.

Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha in the August 2026 bypoll, winning the seat that had previously been represented by BJP leader Nitin Nabin. The result gave Jan Suraaj its first seat in the Bihar Assembly.

According to the PTI report, Kishor secured 64,151 votes, while Neeraj Kumar received 44,827 votes, giving the Jan Suraaj founder a victory margin of 19,324 votes.

The win marked a change from the party's performance in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election, when Jan Suraaj contested 238 seats but did not win any. Kishor himself had not contested that election.

Who is expected at Sunday's event?

The closed-door felicitation programme is being organised by Jan Suraaj supporters based in Delhi. Shantanu said leaders from other political parties had not been invited, although people interested in joining Jan Suraaj would be welcome.

Among those expected to attend are lawyer Tathagat Harsh Vardhan, son of former Buxar MP K K Tiwari, and former Himachal Pradesh Additional Director General of Police J P Singh. Both had contested the 2025 Bihar Assembly election as Jan Suraaj candidates.

From Bihar-focused politics to Delhi

Jan Suraaj's political organisation and electoral activities have so far been centred largely on Bihar. Kishor launched the political organisation after travelling extensively across the state and campaigning around issues including education, employment and governance.

A Delhi chapter would represent an expansion of the party's organisational footprint beyond Bihar. However, the party has not announced a Delhi election strategy or confirmed that it will contest elections in the capital.

Shantanu said the final decision would rest with Kishor and the party leadership after assessing the political prospects and organisational requirements in Delhi.

What happens next?

The Sunday felicitation programme is expected to provide Jan Suraaj supporters in Delhi an opportunity to present their proposal directly to Kishor.

For the party, the immediate focus remains on building its organisation following its first electoral success. Whether that organisational effort will eventually lead to a formal Delhi unit or electoral participation in the capital will depend on the decision of the party leadership.

Kishor's Bankipur victory has already given Jan Suraaj its first representation in the Bihar Assembly. The discussion over a Delhi chapter now indicates that supporters outside Bihar are seeking to build on that political presence, although no decision on contesting elections in Delhi has yet been announced.
