JD(U) Rules Out Review of Bihar's Liquor Prohibition Law, Reaffirms Support for Ban

Patna: The Janata Dal (United) on Monday categorically ruled out any review of Bihar's liquor prohibition law, reiterating that the party remains firmly committed to the state's alcohol ban.

Reacting to speculation over a possible reconsideration of the policy, JD(U) leaders said there is "no question" of reviewing the prohibition law. They described the ban as a significant social reform introduced under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and said the government would continue to implement it.

The party maintained that prohibition has contributed to social welfare by reducing alcohol consumption and improving the well-being of families, particularly women and children. JD(U) leaders argued that despite implementation challenges, the government remains committed to strengthening enforcement rather than altering the law.

Bihar has enforced complete prohibition since April 2016, when the state government banned the manufacture, sale and consumption of liquor. The policy has remained one of the flagship initiatives of the Nitish Kumar administration, although it has also faced criticism over enforcement issues, illegal liquor trade and the burden on the criminal justice system.

Opposition parties have, at various times, questioned the effectiveness of the law and sought changes to its implementation. However, the ruling alliance has consistently defended the policy, maintaining that its social benefits outweigh the challenges.

The latest clarification from JD(U) comes amid renewed political discussions over governance and policy priorities in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections. By ruling out any review, the party has signalled that prohibition will continue to remain a central element of its governance agenda.

The statement is expected to reassure supporters of the prohibition policy while setting the stage for continued political debate over its long-term impact on society and the state's economy.
