Karnataka Faces Fresh Cauvery Water Challenge as CWMA Backs 12,000 Cusec Release to Tamil Nadu

Bengaluru: The long-standing Cauvery water-sharing dispute has resurfaced after the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) endorsed the release of 12,000 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu, placing Karnataka under fresh pressure to comply with the authority's directions.

The CWMA's recommendation came after reviewing the current water storage levels in the Cauvery basin, rainfall patterns and the requirements of the riparian states. The authority directed Karnataka to continue releasing water in accordance with the prescribed schedule to ensure equitable distribution among the basin states.

The decision is expected to trigger fresh political and administrative discussions in Karnataka, where concerns have been raised about reservoir levels, irrigation needs and drinking water availability. Farmer organisations and political leaders in the state have repeatedly argued that Karnataka's own water requirements should receive priority, particularly if rainfall remains below expectations.

Tamil Nadu, on the other hand, has maintained that timely water releases are essential for irrigation and agricultural activities in the Cauvery delta. The state has consistently urged Karnataka to comply with the directions issued by the CWMA and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC).

The Cauvery dispute has historically been one of the most contentious inter-state river water issues in India, involving Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. The sharing of Cauvery waters is governed by the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, as modified by the Supreme Court in 2018, with the CWMA overseeing its implementation.

The latest recommendation is likely to draw political reactions in Karnataka, where parties across the spectrum have often adopted a united stand on protecting the state's water interests. The state government is expected to review the CWMA's directions before deciding on the next course of action.

With the southwest monsoon continuing and reservoir levels under close watch, the implementation of the CWMA's directive will remain a key issue for both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in the coming weeks.
