Kolkata: Heavy rainfall caused waterlogging in several parts of Kolkata on Monday, disrupting traffic and affecting normal life across the city. The weather department has also warned of more intense rainfall across South Bengal over the next 24 hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in several districts of South Bengal till August 18, with extremely heavy rainfall of more than 20 cm possible at one or two places.

Several low-lying areas of Kolkata were affected by waterlogging following intense spells of rain. Traffic movement was disrupted on a number of roads as vehicles struggled to move through waterlogged stretches.

The weather system over the region has increased rainfall activity across southern West Bengal. According to the IMD, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are likely across most districts of South Bengal, while heavy to very heavy rainfall of 7-20 cm is expected at several places.

Purulia, West Burdwan and Bankura are among the districts where isolated extremely heavy rainfall of more than 20 cm has been forecast. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely in other parts of South Bengal.

The IMD has warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in several districts. Winds may reach 40-50 kmph in parts of North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore, while other districts may experience gusts of 30-40 kmph.

The heavy rain has also affected adjoining areas. Haldia in Purba Medinipur recorded 134 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Monday, highlighting the intensity of the ongoing spell across southern West Bengal.

With more rain forecast, residents of low-lying areas have been advised to remain cautious. Commuters are also likely to face disruptions if intense rainfall continues, particularly on roads prone to waterlogging.

The weather office has advised people to follow local weather warnings and take precautions during thunderstorms and periods of intense rainfall.
