Haldia: Heavy rainfall has disrupted normal life in Haldia, with the industrial town recording 134 mm of rain in the 24 hours up to 8.30 am on Monday, August 17. The rainfall was the highest recorded in Purba Medinipur during that period.

The intense spell of rain has raised concerns over waterlogging and drainage in several parts of Haldia. Local residents have reported difficult conditions in low-lying areas, with accumulated rainwater affecting roads and daily movement.

The situation comes amid a wider spell of heavy rainfall across South Bengal. The India Meteorological Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts, including Purba Medinipur, while extremely heavy rainfall has also been forecast in some parts of the region.

For residents of Haldia, the heavy downpour has once again brought attention to the city's drainage infrastructure and its ability to deal with intense rainfall within a short period.

Local social-media posts on Monday also described severe waterlogging in parts of Haldia, with residents sharing concerns over flooded lower areas and difficulties caused by continuous rain. These ground-level reports, however, require location-specific verification before individual roads or wards are identified.

Haldia's drainage challenges are also linked to the wider hydrological setting of the region. The official West Bengal Irrigation and Waterways Department's flood report notes that the lower portion of the Haldi river system is affected by tidal influence and can face drainage problems during the monsoon.

The continuing rainfall is likely to put further pressure on roads, drainage channels and low-lying areas if heavy showers persist.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious while travelling during periods of intense rain, particularly in areas where water accumulates quickly.

The immediate concern for Haldia residents remains the safe movement of people and vehicles and the rapid clearance of accumulated rainwater. With more heavy rain forecast across South Bengal, the condition of the town's drainage and water-management systems is likely to remain under close watch.
