Tarapith: At least eight people were killed and several others injured after a devastating fire broke out at Hotel Bideshini near the Tarapith Temple in West Bengal’s Birbhum district early Monday morning.
The fire broke out around 4:30 am to 5 am on the ground floor of the hotel when many guests were asleep. Thick smoke quickly spread through the building, trapping several people inside their rooms. Most of those staying at the hotel were pilgrims who had travelled to Tarapith during the peak Sravan pilgrimage season.
Rescue teams from the fire department and police reached the spot and began evacuating guests. Several people were rescued using ladders as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.
The incident has raised serious questions over the fire-safety arrangements at the hotel. Reports indicate that the emergency exit was locked, potentially making it more difficult for guests to escape as smoke and flames spread through the building. Local concerns have also been raised over the wider auditing of fire-safety measures at hotels and lodges in the Tarapith area.
Police have arrested the hotel owner, Kalyan Paul, as part of the investigation. Authorities are examining whether the hotel complied with required fire-safety regulations and whether its firefighting and emergency systems were functioning properly.
The cause of the fire is also being investigated. Initial reports have pointed towards a possible electrical fault or short circuit, but authorities are yet to establish the final cause.
The tragedy occurred during the busy Sravan pilgrimage period, when large numbers of devotees visit Tarapith. The incident has renewed concerns over the safety infrastructure of hotels and guest houses in major pilgrimage destinations.
Authorities are continuing the investigation, while the injured victims are receiving medical treatment. Officials are also examining whether further action is required against the hotel management for alleged safety lapses.
