‘Do Bengalis know what rajma is?’: Mahua Moitra slams BJP as Bengal drops eggs from mid-day meals
A fresh political controversy has erupted in West Bengal after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over changes to the state's mid-day meal menu, questioning the replacement of eggs with rajma on certain days.
Reacting to the move, Moitra asked, "Do Bengalis know what rajma is?", arguing that eggs have long been a familiar and affordable source of nutrition for children in the state. Her remarks quickly went viral on social media, drawing both support and criticism.
The controversy centres on the revised mid-day meal menu, under which eggs are reportedly being replaced with rajma on specified days. The change has sparked debate over nutritional standards, regional food preferences and the role of governments in determining school meal menus.
Moitra alleged that the decision reflected an attempt to impose dietary preferences that may not align with local eating habits. She argued that nutrition programmes should prioritise foods that children are accustomed to consuming while ensuring adequate protein intake.
The BJP, however, rejected the criticism, maintaining that rajma is a nutritious, protein-rich food and can serve as an effective alternative in school meals. Party leaders accused the TMC of politicising an administrative decision and attempting to create unnecessary controversy.
The exchange has reignited a broader national debate over school nutrition programmes, with discussions extending beyond the nutritional value of eggs and legumes to include questions of regional food culture, affordability and policy implementation.
Education and nutrition experts have long emphasised that school meal programmes should provide balanced diets while taking into account local food habits, availability of ingredients and the nutritional needs of children.
The issue has also gained traction online, where users expressed differing opinions. While some supported Moitra's argument that eggs are a preferred source of protein for many Bengali children, others said rajma is equally nutritious and widely consumed across the country.
As political parties continue to trade barbs, the debate has shifted from a school meal policy to a larger conversation about nutrition, cultural preferences and governance. Whether the revised menu remains unchanged or is revisited is likely to depend on the state's response to the growing public discussion.
