Murder, Rape, Narcotics Cases: Police Say Crime Suspects Were Among Those Held Over CJP Protest Violence

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Monday claimed that several people detained in connection with violence during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protests had prior criminal records, including cases involving murder, rape and offences under narcotics laws.

According to senior police officials, background verification of those apprehended after the violence revealed that some individuals were already facing investigation or trial in serious criminal cases. The police said the findings formed part of an ongoing probe into the clashes that broke out during the student-led demonstrations in the national capital.

Authorities did not specify how many of those detained had prior criminal records or clarify whether the alleged offences were directly linked to the protests. Officials said the investigation is continuing and further details will be shared as the inquiry progresses.

The protests, organised by the CJP as part of a nationwide campaign seeking accountability over alleged examination irregularities and education reforms, drew thousands of students to Delhi. While much of the demonstration remained peaceful, parts of the protest witnessed confrontations between participants and security personnel, resulting in injuries, detentions and damage to public property, according to the police.

Delhi Police has maintained that action was taken against individuals allegedly involved in violence, vandalism and attacks on security personnel. Officials said the verification of detainees is a standard investigative procedure aimed at establishing their identities and criminal antecedents.

The CJP, however, has consistently denied encouraging violence and has maintained that its movement is peaceful. Party leaders have alleged that the overwhelming majority of protesters were students and ordinary citizens exercising their democratic right to protest. They have also called for an independent inquiry into the events surrounding the police action.

The latest police claims have added a fresh dimension to the ongoing political debate over the protests, with opposition parties and civil society groups continuing to seek greater transparency regarding the crackdown. Legal experts note that the existence of previous criminal cases against some individuals does not, by itself, establish responsibility for any offences allegedly committed during the protest. Any allegations related to the current case must be proven through due legal process.

The investigation into the violence remains ongoing, with police examining CCTV footage, mobile phone videos, witness statements and forensic evidence. Authorities have indicated that additional arrests and legal action could follow if further evidence emerges.
