Alpha review: Stylish action can't save an underwhelming YRF Spy Universe outing

The YRF Spy Universe expands with Alpha, marking the franchise's first female-led action thriller starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari. Expectations were naturally sky-high given the success of films such as Ek Tha Tiger, War, Pathaan and Tiger 3. However, despite its ambitious scale and polished action sequences, Alpha falls short of delivering the gripping espionage drama fans have come to expect.

Directed with the franchise's signature blend of globe-trotting missions, high-octane chases and stylish combat, Alpha follows two elite agents navigating an international conspiracy that threatens national security. While the premise promises an engaging spy thriller, the screenplay struggles to maintain momentum, relying heavily on familiar tropes and predictable twists.

Alia Bhatt delivers a committed performance, bringing emotional depth and physical intensity to her role. She convincingly handles the demanding action sequences and carries much of the film's emotional weight. Sharvari complements her well, showcasing confidence and agility in her first major action role within the Spy Universe.

Despite the chemistry between the two leads, the film is let down by uneven writing. Several emotional moments feel rushed, while the central conflict lacks the intrigue needed to sustain a two-hour-plus espionage thriller. The villains, despite an imposing setup, fail to emerge as memorable antagonists.

Visually, Alpha impresses with lavish production values, exotic international locations and expertly choreographed action. The cinematography and background score enhance the cinematic experience, while the stunt choreography delivers several adrenaline-fuelled set pieces that should appeal to fans of the franchise.

The film's biggest crowd-pleasing moment arrives with Hrithik Roshan's appearance as Kabir from War. Although his screen time is limited, the cameo injects fresh energy into the narrative and offers a tantalising glimpse of future crossover possibilities within the YRF Spy Universe. His presence has already become one of the film's most talked-about aspects among audiences.

The supporting cast delivers competent performances, but few characters receive enough development to leave a lasting impression. The screenplay prioritises spectacle over substance, resulting in a film that entertains in parts but rarely surprises.

As the YRF Spy Universe continues to grow, Alpha succeeds in expanding its roster of protagonists but falls short of matching the storytelling standards set by some of its predecessors. While fans of the franchise may appreciate the action, star power and interconnected universe, those seeking a tightly written spy thriller may come away disappointed.
