‘Charles Sobhraj of Kashmir’ Arrested

Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested an 80-year-old former Ayurvedic doctor accused of carrying out fraudulent land deals using multiple identities and forged documents.

The elderly man has been described as the “Charles Sobhraj of Kashmir” in connection with the alleged cheating cases.

According to the report, he allegedly sold land that he did not own and used different identities and forged documents to deceive buyers.

The Crime Branch investigation eventually led police to a house in Zewan, on the outskirts of Srinagar.

Police Reach Zewan House

The police operation took place on September 24, when J&K Police arrived at a house in the Zewan area.

The officers were searching for the accused and were told by a woman who answered the door that he had already left.

However, the police personnel asked her to show them the room where the man had been staying.

The woman took the officers to the room and tapped cautiously on the door.

That action immediately raised the suspicions of the Crime Branch team.

Suspicious Door-Tapping Alerts Investigators

An official associated with the investigation questioned why someone would tap on the door if there was supposedly nobody inside.

The unusual behaviour alerted the Crime Branch personnel.

The team quickly spread out, with some officers entering the room while others secured the windows.

Inside the room, they found the elderly man sitting under a dim light.

He was holding his favourite Urdu newspaper and apparently had little idea that his reading habit had helped police trace him to the house.

Newspaper Subscription Became a Major Clue

One of the unusual aspects of the investigation was the role played by the man's newspaper subscription.

The accused reportedly had a regular subscription to his favourite Urdu newspaper.

That connection helped investigators establish his whereabouts and eventually led them to the house where he had been hiding.

The newspaper, which the elderly man regularly received, became an unexpected clue in the police investigation.

Accused Allegedly Used Multiple Identities

The 80-year-old former Ayurvedic doctor is accused of using multiple identities while carrying out fraudulent land transactions.

According to the report, he allegedly used forged documents to convince buyers that he had ownership or control over land that he did not actually own.

The alleged method allowed him to enter into land deals and cheat buyers.

The use of multiple identities and forged documents also made tracing him more difficult for investigators.

Allegations of Fake Land Deals

The case centres on allegations of fraudulent property transactions.

The accused allegedly sold land that did not belong to him, using false identities and forged documentation in the process.

People who believed they were entering legitimate land transactions were allegedly cheated through these deals.

The investigation by the Crime Branch eventually focused on tracing the elderly accused after allegations of such fraudulent transactions came to light.

Crime Branch Tracks the Accused

The Crime Branch played a key role in tracking down the accused.

After reaching the Zewan house, investigators noticed behaviour that did not match the claim that nobody was inside.

The officers then secured the area and entered the room.

They found the elderly man inside, sitting under a dim light and reading his preferred Urdu newspaper.

The discovery brought the search for the accused to an end at the house on Srinagar's outskirts.

An Unusual Trail Leads to the Arrest

The circumstances surrounding the arrest were unusual.

The police were led to a house where they were initially told that the man they were looking for had already left.

However, the behaviour of the woman who showed them his room raised suspicion.

Her tapping on the door, despite claiming that nobody was inside, alerted the Crime Branch team.

The officers then acted quickly, securing the windows and entering the room.

Inside was the elderly man they had been looking for.

How the Newspaper Helped Police

The accused's attachment to his favourite Urdu newspaper became an important part of the trail.

His regular newspaper subscription provided investigators with a clue that helped them establish where he was staying.

The fact that he continued receiving the newspaper while hiding meant that the subscription could be connected to his location.

Ultimately, the ordinary routine of receiving and reading a newspaper became an unexpected factor in his arrest.

Investigation Into Alleged Fraud Continues

The arrest follows allegations that the former Ayurvedic doctor cheated buyers through fake land transactions.

Police accuse him of using multiple identities and forged documents to sell land that he did not own.

The details of the alleged transactions form part of the Crime Branch investigation.

His arrest in Zewan came after investigators traced his movements and identified the location where he had been staying.

The episode has drawn attention because of the unusual circumstances of the arrest, particularly the role played by his newspaper subscription.

The elderly man was eventually found inside a dimly lit room, holding the same Urdu newspaper that had reportedly helped police trace him.
