The protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls entered its third consecutive day in New Delhi on Sunday.
Hundreds of protesters, including All India Students’ Association (AISA) national president Neha Bora and activist Yogendra Yadav, were detained by police and taken away in police vehicles. The protesters were detained for several hours during the demonstration.
The protest focused on allegations of irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls and the demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The latest demonstration came a day after three women journalists accused Delhi Police officers of sexual harassment while they were covering the protest near Jantar Mantar.
On Sunday, protesters raised two separate but related demands. While one group continued to demonstrate against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, another group attempted to march towards Jantar Mantar, seeking accountability and an investigation into the allegations made by the journalists.
Student activists were seen attempting to move past police barricades near Ashoka Road as they sought to march towards Jantar Mantar.
The police detained several protesters during the demonstrations as the anti-EC stir continued for a third day.
The protests have brought renewed attention to the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls and the demands being raised by activists and political figures over the process.
At the same time, the allegations made by the three women journalists against Delhi Police personnel have added another dimension to the ongoing demonstrations, with protesters calling for accountability and a probe into the allegations.
