Delhi High Court moved over Sonam Wangchuk's health during indefinite fast
The Delhi High Court has been approached with a petition seeking urgent medical intervention for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on an indefinite hunger strike over demands related to Ladakh.
The plea urges the court to direct authorities to ensure that Wangchuk receives a liquid diet and appropriate medical treatment, including hospitalisation if required, citing concerns over his prolonged fast and the potential risk to his health.
The petition comes as Wangchuk's protest continues to draw nationwide attention, with supporters, public figures and political leaders expressing concern over his well-being.
Plea seeks medical care amid health concerns
According to the petition, Wangchuk's prolonged hunger strike could lead to serious medical complications if left unattended.
The petitioner has requested the High Court to issue appropriate directions to the authorities to monitor his health, provide necessary medical assistance and, if required, shift him to a hospital for treatment.
The plea reportedly argues that the State has a duty to safeguard life while balancing an individual's right to peaceful protest.
Court yet to decide on relief
The High Court is expected to examine the maintainability of the petition and consider whether any interim directions are warranted.
At this stage, the court has not expressed any opinion on the merits of the plea or the relief sought.
Any decision would have to take into account constitutional protections relating to personal liberty, the right to protest and the obligation of authorities to preserve life.
Wangchuk's protest continues
Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer, education reformer and environmental activist, has been on an indefinite hunger strike to press for greater constitutional safeguards and environmental protection for Ladakh.
His protest has attracted widespread public attention, with supporters highlighting concerns over ecological conservation, local governance and the protection of the Himalayan region.
Civil society groups and several public personalities have also appealed for dialogue between the government and the activist to address the issues raised.
Debate over medical intervention
The petition has also reignited discussion on the legal and ethical questions surrounding medical intervention in hunger strikes.
Courts have previously dealt with similar issues by balancing an individual's autonomy with the State's responsibility to protect life and maintain public order.
Legal experts note that any direction relating to medical treatment would depend on the specific facts of the case, Wangchuk's medical condition and applicable constitutional and legal principles.
Matter likely to come up for hearing
The Delhi High Court is expected to hear the matter in due course.
The outcome of the proceedings could determine whether any medical safeguards are put in place during Wangchuk's ongoing fast while broader discussions continue over the demands that prompted his protest.
