Delhi: MCD launches anti-encroachment drive in Jama Masjid area

New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched an anti-encroachment drive in the Jama Masjid area, as part of efforts to identify and remove illegal constructions and encroachments in the historic locality.

The action comes after the court directed authorities to conduct a detailed survey of the area. The court had also made it clear that if any illegal construction, encroachment or unauthorised use was found during the survey, appropriate action under the law should be taken without delay.

The Jama Masjid area is one of the busiest and most densely populated parts of Old Delhi, with a large number of commercial establishments, residential properties and street-side activities. Encroachments in the area have often raised concerns over pedestrian movement, traffic management and public access.

As part of the latest drive, MCD teams are inspecting locations and taking action against structures and activities found to be in violation of municipal rules. The exercise is also aimed at ensuring that public spaces and roads remain accessible.

The court's directions have put the focus on ensuring that the survey is followed by timely action wherever violations are detected. Authorities are expected to assess the nature of each violation and proceed according to the applicable laws and regulations.

The Jama Masjid area attracts large crowds throughout the year, particularly during festivals and religious occasions. Officials have therefore also been concerned about maintaining adequate space for pedestrians and ensuring smooth movement in the congested neighbourhood.

The anti-encroachment operation is part of a broader effort by civic authorities to regulate unauthorised construction and reclaim public spaces in Delhi. Further action is expected based on the findings of the ongoing survey and inspections.
