Mumbai: Indian rock outfit Girish and the Chronicles (GATC) believes heavy metal is witnessing a resurgence among younger listeners, with Gen Z discovering the genre through streaming platforms, social media and international music festivals.

In an exclusive interview, the band reflected on its journey from the Indian rock circuit to performing on global stages, saying the appetite for Indian rock has grown significantly over the past few years.

'Rock music has no boundaries'

The band said music lovers today are far more open to exploring genres beyond mainstream Bollywood and commercial pop.

"Rock music has no geographical boundaries anymore. Streaming platforms have allowed listeners across the world to discover artists they may never have heard otherwise," the band said.

Known for blending classic hard rock with modern production, Girish and the Chronicles has steadily built a loyal international fanbase through performances across Europe and appearances at some of the world's biggest rock festivals.

Gen Z is discovering heavy metal

Despite the widespread popularity of hip-hop, electronic music and pop, the band believes heavy metal is finding new audiences among younger listeners.

According to the musicians, Gen Z values authenticity and individuality—qualities that have always defined rock music.

"Many young listeners are looking for music that speaks about freedom, identity and emotion. Heavy metal gives them that space," the band said.

The group added that social media platforms have helped younger audiences rediscover legendary bands alongside contemporary rock acts, creating a fresh wave of interest in the genre.

Rebellion remains part of rock's DNA

Discussing the essence of heavy metal, the band said rebellion should not be confused with negativity.

Instead, they described it as a mindset that encourages people to challenge conventions, express themselves honestly and think independently.

"Rock has always stood for questioning the status quo. That spirit continues even today," the members said.

They stressed that the genre's emotional intensity and storytelling continue to resonate across generations.

Taking Indian rock to the world

For GATC, representing India on international stages carries a sense of responsibility.

The band said it hopes its success encourages more Indian rock musicians to dream beyond domestic audiences and compete globally.

Members also acknowledged the growing ecosystem for independent music in India, crediting festivals, digital platforms and dedicated fan communities for creating new opportunities for artists outside the mainstream.

Looking ahead

With new music and international performances on the horizon, Girish and the Chronicles says its focus remains on creating authentic rock music rather than chasing trends.
