Mexico City: Mexican football icon Guillermo Ochoa joined an elite group of players to feature in six FIFA World Cups as hosts Mexico sealed a commanding 3-0 victory over Czechia to finish top of Group A with a perfect record.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper came off the bench in the 77th minute at a packed Estadio Azteca, receiving a standing ovation from home supporters. His appearance placed him alongside football greats such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi among the select few players to have featured in six World Cup tournaments.

Mexico, already assured of qualification for the knockout rounds, completed a historic group-stage campaign by winning all three of their matches for the first time in World Cup history. Javier Aguirre's side finished Group A with nine points and without conceding a goal.

After a cagey first half, Mexico found their breakthrough in the 55th minute when young defender Mateo Chávez opened the scoring. Julián Quiñones doubled the advantage six minutes later, putting the hosts firmly in control. Substitute Álvaro Fidalgo added a third goal deep into stoppage time to complete an emphatic victory.

The match also marked a significant moment for 17-year-old Gilberto Mora, who became the youngest Mexican player to start a World Cup match. Mexico's blend of youthful talent and experienced leadership has emerged as one of the tournament's early success stories.

For Ochoa, the evening carried special significance. The veteran goalkeeper made what is expected to be his final World Cup appearance at the same stadium where he launched his professional career more than two decades ago. Speaking after the match, Ochoa described the occasion as a fitting final chapter in his journey with the national team.

Czechia, meanwhile, exited the tournament after managing just one point from three matches. Their hopes of reaching the knockout phase never truly materialised as Mexico dominated possession and created the better chances throughout the contest. Captain Tomáš Souček's late injury added to a disappointing night for the European side.

The victory ensures Mexico remain in Mexico City for their Round of 32 clash, where they will look to continue their impressive run and challenge for a place in the latter stages of the tournament. The hosts are aiming to reach the quarter-finals of a World Cup for the first time since the editions held on home soil in 1970 and 1986.
