New Delhi: The Indian cricket team’s squad selection for the upcoming West Indies series is being closely watched, with former captain Rohit Sharma’s ODI future once again at the centre of attention.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, September 16, to finalise India’s squads for the three-match ODI and five-match T20I series against the West Indies. The ODI series begins on September 27.

Rohit, now 39, remains available for ODI cricket despite having handed over the captaincy to Shubman Gill. His performances in 2026 have kept the discussion around his place in the team alive, particularly after he scored a commanding 138 at Lord’s against England in July.

Rohit’s 2027 World Cup plans remain uncertain

Rohit’s potential participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup has been a recurring subject of discussion.

Before the England series, reports indicated that selectors were considering moving towards a younger opening combination and giving Yashasvi Jaiswal more opportunities ahead of the next World Cup. However, Rohit responded with a strong performance at Lord’s, adding another dimension to the selection debate.

Rohit himself has played down speculation about the 2027 tournament. He recently said that October 2027 is still a long way away, while focusing on his immediate ODI assignments.

The BCCI secretary has also previously indicated that Rohit remains in the selectors’ plans as long as he is considered part of the team's scheme of things.

Why this selection meeting is significant for Ajit Agarkar

The squad announcement comes at an important point in Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of the men's selection committee.

Agarkar’s current contract runs until October 4, 2026, and reports have suggested that discussions over a possible extension have been taking place. The September 16 selection meeting could therefore be his final meeting in the role if his tenure is not extended.

Earlier this month, Agarkar did not attend a BCCI review meeting in Mumbai. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia subsequently said Agarkar was out of station and unable to join online because of connectivity problems, adding that no discussion about changes to the selection committee took place at that meeting.

Rohit is not the only major name under discussion.

Hardik Pandya’s fitness and availability are expected to be considered by the selectors. He has been included in the India A squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia A, subject to achieving full fitness, meaning he is set to miss the West Indies ODIs.

Rishabh Pant’s possible return to the white-ball setup is another selection issue being reported ahead of the meeting.

The wicketkeeper-batter's inclusion could affect the balance of India's ODI squad, particularly with KL Rahul and other wicketkeeping options also available.

For India's 2026 England ODI series, the selectors named Shubman Gill as captain, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli included in the squad. Shreyas Iyer was named vice-captain, while KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan were among the wicketkeeping options.
