The Supreme Court on Monday cancelled the bail granted by the Bombay High Court to Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who is accused of assaulting three municipal doctors at a civic hospital in Thane on July 6.

The Bombay High Court had granted bail to Mhatre and others in August while imposing restrictions on their entry into Maharashtra until the trial.

The Supreme Court had earlier expressed strong concern over incidents involving attacks on doctors. Mhatre had subsequently withdrawn his appeal against the bail conditions.

LPU Suspends Classes After Violent Protests

Lovely Professional University in Phagwara suspended classes for 10 days following violent unrest on the campus.

Several students began leaving the university, while those who remained on campus were advised to stay indoors.

More than 2,000 police personnel were deployed in the area and a flag march was conducted.

Kerala Police registered a case against five people over allegedly defamatory and objectionable Facebook posts targeting AICC general secretary K C Venugopal.

Former West Bengal MLA Arrested

Former West Bengal MLA Biswajit Das was arrested after police allegedly recovered an illegal firearm from his car in North 24 Parganas district.

According to officials, police intercepted Das's vehicle at Gopalnagar market following information received by them.

A firearm was allegedly recovered during a search of the vehicle. Police had not disclosed further details about the weapon at the time of the report.

Five Killed in Jammu and Kashmir Road Accident

Five people were killed and six others injured after an SUV plunged into the Kishanganga River in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The accident occurred on Seemari road in the Teetwal area of north Kashmir.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, while rescue teams launched an operation following the accident.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the deaths.
