Co-star alleges Kamal Haasan altered crucial scene in Vasool Raja MBBS
Fresh controversy has emerged around Kamal Haasan's 2004 film Vasool Raja MBBS after a former co-star alleged that the veteran actor's "self-obsession" compromised one of the remake's most important scenes.
The allegation relates to Vasool Raja MBBS, the Tamil adaptation of the Hindi blockbuster Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., starring Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi. The remake, directed by Saran, featured Kamal Haasan in the lead role alongside Prabhu, Sneha and Prakash Raj.
According to the co-star, a pivotal emotional sequence from the original film lost much of its impact in the Tamil version because of creative changes allegedly driven by Kamal Haasan. The actor claimed that the original screenplay placed greater emphasis on the emotional journey of supporting characters, whereas the remake shifted the focus more heavily towards Kamal Haasan's character.
Describing the change as a result of "self-obsession," the co-star suggested that the decision weakened the emotional depth of the scene, which many fans consider one of the defining moments of the original Hindi film.
The remarks have resurfaced amid renewed interest in behind-the-scenes stories from classic Indian films. Clips of the interview have circulated widely on social media, prompting mixed reactions from cinema enthusiasts. While some users agreed that the Tamil remake differed significantly from the original in terms of emotional treatment, others defended Kamal Haasan, arguing that adaptations often require creative liberties to suit regional audiences.
Released in 2004, Vasool Raja MBBS was both a critical and commercial success. Despite being a remake, the film was praised for its humour, performances and screenplay, with Kamal Haasan's portrayal of the lovable gangster-turned-medical student earning appreciation from audiences.
Over the years, the actor has been known for actively participating in the creative aspects of his films, including screenplay discussions and character development. Admirers view this as a hallmark of his filmmaking process, while critics have occasionally argued that it leads to an excessive focus on his own roles.
As of now, Kamal Haasan has not publicly responded to the latest allegations. Given the subjective nature of creative decisions in filmmaking, the claim remains the opinion of the co-star and has not been independently verified.Kamal Haasan accused of changing key Munna Bhai remake scene
