NC-Congress Differences Emerge Over Vande Mataram

Fresh differences have emerged between the National Conference (NC) and Congress in Jammu and Kashmir after the full version of Vande Mataram was played at the inauguration of the International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir (IFFJK) in Srinagar.

The unabridged national song was played during the festival's opening ceremony on Monday in the presence of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and NC president Farooq Abdullah. The development prompted objections from Congress leaders, bringing tensions within the alliance into public view.

National Conference Defends Full Rendition

The National Conference defended the decision, saying the government was following official protocol and that nobody would be compelled to sing the song.

NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said that once Parliament had adopted the relevant framework, playing Vande Mataram at an official state event constituted a statutory obligation. He also stressed that the government's position should be distinguished from the party's ideological position.

Sadiq further pointed to official functions in Congress-ruled Karnataka and Telangana where the complete version of Vande Mataram had reportedly been played, challenging the criticism coming from the Jammu and Kashmir Congress.

Congress Raises Concerns Over Pluralist Ethos

Congress has strongly objected to the use of the unabridged version at the film festival.

Congress general secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal shared a video of the event and argued that the full version does not sit comfortably with India's syncretic and pluralist traditions. He urged alliance partners to respect the historical decision taken by the Congress Working Committee in 1937 to adopt a truncated version of the song while taking religious diversity into consideration.

Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Tariq Hamid Karra also criticised the NC's position. He said national symbols should reflect India's constitutional character and diversity, arguing that the adopted version represented a balance between historical significance and religious sensitivities.

NC Hits Back at Congress

The dispute escalated after Sadiq responded to Karra by sharing videos from Independence Day events in Karnataka and Telangana where the full version of Vande Mataram was played.

The NC questioned why Congress leaders in Jammu and Kashmir were objecting to the rendition when Congress-ruled states had also hosted official events featuring the complete song.

Political Significance for J&K Alliance

The controversy is significant because Congress provides outside support to the NC-led government in Jammu and Kashmir and has six MLAs in the 90-member Assembly.

Although the disagreement is centred on the rendition of a national song, it highlights differences between the two parties over questions involving national symbols, religious diversity and political positioning.

The issue has also drawn attention because the full rendition took place at a major cultural event attended by the J&K chief minister and senior NC leaders.

Vande Mataram Debate Continues

The latest disagreement adds another layer to the broader national debate over how Vande Mataram should be performed at official functions.

For the NC, the focus is on government protocol and the distinction between an official event and an individual's freedom to choose whether to sing. Congress, meanwhile, is emphasising the historical context behind the adoption of the truncated version and the need to respect India's plural character.
