Shobhaa De Defends Ranveer in Don 3 Controversy

Shobhaa De comes out in support of Ranveer Singh

Bollywood’s simmering Don 3 controversy took another dramatic turn on Thursday after veteran columnist and author Shobhaa De publicly defended Ranveer Singh and filmmaker Aditya Dhar against what she described as an “ugly conspiracy.”

The outspoken author reacted to the growing online backlash surrounding Ranveer’s casting in Don 3, a project that has remained under intense scrutiny ever since the actor was announced as the new face of the franchise originally associated with Amitabh Bachchan and later reinvented by Shah Rukh Khan.

Taking to social media, De alleged that a coordinated campaign was being run against both Ranveer and Dhar, whose upcoming action film Dhurandhar has also become part of industry chatter.

“Trying to ‘ban’ talented people through planted negativity and orchestrated trolling exposes the insecurity of certain camps,” De reportedly wrote, adding that the attacks against the actor-director duo appeared “deliberate and deeply malicious.”

Her remarks quickly triggered sharp reactions online, dividing Bollywood fans and reigniting debate over franchise loyalty, star power, and industry politics.

Why Ranveer Singh’s Don 3 casting sparked backlash

The controversy dates back to August 2023, when filmmaker Farhan Akhtar officially announced Ranveer Singh as the lead in the next installment of the Don franchise.

The decision immediately polarized audiences.

For many fans, Shah Rukh Khan’s stylish portrayal of Don in the 2006 reboot and its 2011 sequel had become definitive. Replacing him was always going to be difficult. Social media platforms were flooded with criticism, memes, and hashtags questioning whether Ranveer was the right choice for the role.

Some fans argued that the franchise should either continue with Shah Rukh or be shelved altogether. Others defended Ranveer, pointing to his versatility and proven box-office appeal in films such as Padmaavat, Gully Boy, and 83.

Over the past few months, the debate has intensified again amid reports of production delays and speculation surrounding casting changes.

Industry insiders say the noise around the film has grown unusually aggressive, with several online fan groups targeting the project before shooting has even begun.

Aditya Dhar dragged into online speculation

The latest controversy widened after filmmaker Aditya Dhar, known for directing the blockbuster Uri: The Surgical Strike, became linked to discussions around alleged “industry camps” and rivalry narratives.

Dhar is currently working on Dhurandhar, a high-profile action project reportedly featuring Ranveer Singh in a central role. Although no official connection exists between the controversies surrounding Don 3 and Dhurandhar, online speculation has attempted to tie the two projects together.

Shobhaa De’s comments appear to be a direct response to that growing narrative.

Entertainment trade analyst Komal Nahta said the situation reflects the increasingly toxic nature of digital fandoms in Bollywood.

“Franchise transitions are always emotionally charged in India,” Nahta said during a television discussion. “But social media has amplified every disagreement into a war. Actors are judged before audiences even see a teaser.”

Bollywood’s franchise problem

The Don 3 row also highlights a larger issue facing Bollywood today — how to continue successful franchises when iconic stars move on.

Recent Hindi cinema history shows that audiences often struggle to accept recasting decisions in beloved franchises. Producers face immense pressure balancing nostalgia with the need to attract younger viewers.

Ranveer Singh, despite his commercial success, remains one of Bollywood’s most polarizing stars online. While many praise his energetic screen presence and risk-taking performances, critics frequently question his fit in legacy roles.

Film critic Taran Adarsh believes the backlash reflects emotional attachment rather than genuine rejection.

“People resisted Shah Rukh Khan too when he stepped into Amitabh Bachchan’s shoes in 2006,” Adarsh said. “Today those films are cult classics. Cinema evolves. Franchises evolve.”

That comparison has now become central to the current debate.

Supporters of Ranveer argue that Shah Rukh himself once faced skepticism for replacing Amitabh Bachchan in the franchise. They believe audiences should wait until promotional material from Don 3 is released before passing judgment.

Fans split across social media

The controversy has dominated entertainment conversations on X, Instagram, and Reddit throughout the week.

Several hashtags linked to Ranveer Singh and Don 3 trended briefly after Shobhaa De’s comments surfaced online. Supporters praised her for speaking openly against coordinated trolling, while critics accused Bollywood insiders of dismissing genuine audience criticism as “conspiracy.”

One viral post supporting Ranveer read: “Nobody complained when SRK replaced Amitabh. Give Ranveer the same chance.”

Another user wrote: “Fans have every right to reject bad casting. Not everything is a conspiracy.”

The divided reactions underline how emotionally invested audiences remain in the franchise.

No official response yet from Ranveer or Farhan Akhtar

As of Friday evening, neither Ranveer Singh nor Farhan Akhtar had publicly responded to Shobhaa De’s remarks.

Production timelines for Don 3 also remain unclear. Earlier reports suggested filming could begin later this year, though industry uncertainty and scheduling conflicts have reportedly delayed the project.

Meanwhile, anticipation surrounding Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar continues to grow, particularly after reports claimed the film would feature large-scale action sequences and a multi-star cast.

Trade experts believe both projects will remain under heavy public scrutiny in the coming months.

What happens next

For now, the Don 3 debate shows no signs of slowing down.

The controversy has evolved beyond simple casting criticism into a larger conversation about Bollywood fandom culture, online trolling, and the pressures of rebooting iconic franchises.

Whether Ranveer Singh ultimately wins over skeptical audiences may depend less on social media discourse and more on the first trailer, music, and overall vision of the film.

Until then, every statement from Bollywood insiders is likely to fuel fresh headlines in one of the industry’s most closely watched casting battles.
