'TRP Is Not the Right Tool to Judge a Show's Success or Failure': Smita Bansal

Television actor Smita Bansal believes Television Rating Points (TRPs) alone cannot determine whether a show is successful or unsuccessful. Speaking about the evolving entertainment landscape, the veteran actor said audience engagement today extends beyond traditional television ratings, with digital viewership and long-term impact playing an equally important role.

'TRP Is Not the Right Tool to Judge a Show's Success or Failure': Smita Bansal

Veteran television actor Smita Bansal has questioned the importance attached to Television Rating Points (TRPs), saying they should not be considered the sole measure of a show's success or failure.

In an industry where TRPs often influence programming decisions and determine the fate of television serials, Bansal believes audience preferences have evolved significantly with the rise of digital platforms and changing viewing habits.

"TRP is not the right tool to judge a show's success or failure," the actor said while sharing her views on the current television landscape.

'Success Can't Be Measured by One Number'

According to Bansal, a television show's impact extends far beyond weekly ratings.

She said many serials continue to enjoy immense popularity through repeat telecasts, streaming platforms and social media discussions even if their television ratings are modest.

The actor argued that reducing a show's performance to a single numerical metric overlooks several other factors that contribute to its overall success.

Changing Audience Habits

Bansal pointed out that the way audiences consume entertainment has changed dramatically over the past few years.

Many viewers now prefer watching episodes on OTT platforms or catching up later through digital services instead of tuning in during the original television broadcast.

As a result, traditional TRP data may not fully capture a programme's actual reach and popularity.

Pressure on Television Industry

TRPs continue to play a significant role in the television business, influencing advertising revenue and programming decisions.

Shows with consistently low ratings often face scheduling changes or cancellation, placing pressure on actors, producers and broadcasters alike.

Bansal, however, believes creative storytelling and audience appreciation should also be given equal importance when evaluating a programme's performance.

Value of Audience Connection

The actor emphasised that meaningful audience engagement often lasts much longer than weekly rating reports.

She noted that several television shows continue to receive appreciation years after they go off air, demonstrating that cultural impact cannot always be reflected through TRP charts alone.

According to her, genuine viewer loyalty is a stronger indicator of a show's success.

Industry-Wide Debate

Bansal's remarks echo a broader discussion within the entertainment industry regarding the relevance of conventional television ratings in the streaming era.

Many actors and producers have previously argued that digital viewership, online engagement and international audiences should increasingly be considered while assessing a show's popularity.

The debate has intensified as OTT platforms continue to reshape viewing patterns across India.

Looking Ahead

As the television industry adapts to changing audience behaviour, the role of TRPs is likely to remain under scrutiny.

While ratings will continue to influence commercial decisions, Smita Bansal believes the true success of a show lies in its ability to connect with audiences, leave a lasting impression and remain relevant long after its broadcast.
