‘Lost 2 kg, BP low’: Dipke flags concerns over Sonam Wangchuk's health amid hunger strike, activist says he is ‘fine’

New Delhi: Concerns are mounting over the health of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk as his indefinite hunger strike entered its fourth day, with protest organisers saying he has lost nearly 2 kg and is experiencing a steady drop in blood pressure.

Providing a medical update from the protest site at Jantar Mantar, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke said Wangchuk's condition was being closely monitored by doctors.

"Sonam sir has lost 2 kg since the start of his hunger strike. His blood pressure has been consistently falling," Dipke said in a post on X, while urging authorities to take the situation seriously.

Wangchuk says he is 'fine'

Despite the health concerns, Wangchuk sought to reassure his supporters, saying he remained determined to continue the protest.

"I am fine now. I am feeling a little tired, but I will continue," the activist said, adding that he remains committed to the demands behind the hunger strike.

Doctors attending to Wangchuk have reportedly observed fluctuations in his vital parameters since the fast began. Earlier medical updates indicated that his blood sugar levels had also dropped below the normal range, prompting calls from organisers for regular medical supervision.

Why is Sonam Wangchuk on hunger strike?

Wangchuk began his indefinite hunger strike on June 28 in support of the ongoing CJP protest at Jantar Mantar. The demonstration is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in national entrance examinations, including the NEET-UG paper leak controversy.

The protest has drawn students, activists and civil society groups, with organisers also raising concerns over facilities available at the demonstration site.

Organisers seek government response

Dipke has repeatedly appealed to the government to engage with the protesters, warning that Wangchuk's deteriorating health should not be ignored. Protest organisers have said they will continue the agitation until their demands are addressed.

Meanwhile, Wangchuk has maintained that the fast is intended to draw attention to issues affecting students and the education system, while urging supporters to keep the movement peaceful.

As the hunger strike continues, doctors are expected to conduct regular health assessments, while supporters remain gathered at Jantar Mantar in solidarity with the activist.
