Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's England Call-Up Push Gains Momentum
The clamour for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's inclusion in India's senior cricket team is becoming impossible to ignore.
Just days after completing one of the most remarkable seasons in IPL history, the 15-year-old batting prodigy has received another major endorsement. Former England fast bowler Steven Finn believes Sooryavanshi is ready for international cricket and should be considered for India's upcoming white-ball assignments in England and Ireland.
The comments come as Indian selectors continue to evaluate options for a packed international calendar. While India possess one of the strongest batting units in world cricket, experts increasingly believe that Sooryavanshi's extraordinary performances warrant serious consideration.
A Season That Changed Everything
Few players have captured the imagination of cricket fans quite like Sooryavanshi during IPL 2026.
Representing Rajasthan Royals, the teenage opener produced numbers that even seasoned international stars would envy. He finished the tournament with an astonishing 776 runs in 16 matches, winning the Orange Cap and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. His strike rate exceeded 230, while his six-hitting shattered several tournament records.
What made the campaign even more remarkable was his age.
At just 15, Sooryavanshi consistently dismantled some of the world's best bowlers. Whether facing international fast bowlers with years of experience or established spin stars, the youngster displayed confidence rarely seen in players so early in their careers.
His performances helped Rajasthan Royals reach the playoffs and transformed him into one of the biggest stories of the season.
"He Would Make the Team Better"
Speaking on a cricket discussion platform, Steven Finn made perhaps the strongest case yet for Sooryavanshi's immediate inclusion in India's plans.
"I would love to see him in an Indian shirt in the UK summer," Finn said.
The former England pacer acknowledged that India's batting line-up is already packed with world-class talent. However, he argued that exceptional players deserve opportunities regardless of competition.
"India are world champions and it's a tough call on the opening positions. Yet whoever he replaces, he would make the team better," Finn said.
That statement is particularly noteworthy considering India's depth at the top of the order. The national team already boasts several proven international performers, making selection decisions increasingly difficult.
Yet Finn believes Sooryavanshi's impact goes beyond statistics.
According to him, the youngster's fearlessness, consistency and ability to dominate elite bowling attacks separate him from most emerging talents.
Selectors Already Fast-Tracking the Teenager
The excitement surrounding Sooryavanshi is not limited to commentators and former players.
India's selectors have already signalled their long-term plans by including him in the India A set-up. Reports suggest that his selection for developmental tours is part of a broader strategy to gradually integrate him into the senior white-ball structure.
Cricket observers believe upcoming series against Ireland, England and Zimbabwe could provide opportunities to test young talent while continuing preparations for future ICC tournaments.
His India A selection was widely interpreted as the first major step towards a senior call-up.
Support Growing Across Cricket Circles
Finn is far from the only prominent voice backing the teenager.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar recently argued that Sooryavanshi is ready for international cricket and should be considered for India's T20 squad.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara described him as "more than ready" for the next level and predicted that a national call-up could arrive sooner rather than later.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri and several other cricket experts have also spoken positively about accelerating his development pathway.
Such unanimous praise is rare in Indian cricket, where caution often accompanies discussions about young players.
Not Everyone Wants to Rush the Process
Despite the excitement, some experts have urged restraint.
Former India batter and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has warned against pushing the teenager into overseas international cricket too quickly. He argues that managing expectations is crucial when dealing with a player still in his mid-teens.
The concern is understandable.
Indian cricket has witnessed several young stars emerge rapidly before struggling under the weight of expectations. While Sooryavanshi appears mentally mature beyond his years, administrators are keen to ensure his long-term development remains the priority.
Balancing opportunity with protection will be one of the biggest challenges facing selectors.
A Modern Cricketing Phenomenon
Beyond runs and records, Sooryavanshi has become a cultural phenomenon.
His popularity has surged dramatically since the IPL season. Major brands are reportedly exploring endorsement opportunities, while social media engagement around the teenager continues to climb. Industry observers already view him as one of Indian cricket's most marketable young athletes.
Yet those close to him insist that cricket remains the focus.
In recent interactions, Sooryavanshi revealed that he ultimately wants to succeed in Test cricket as well, highlighting ambitions that stretch far beyond T20 stardom.
That mindset has impressed former players, many of whom see him as a potential multi-format cricketer rather than simply a white-ball specialist.
What Happens Next?
India's selectors are expected to finalise plans for upcoming overseas assignments in the coming weeks.
Whether Sooryavanshi receives an immediate senior call-up remains uncertain. However, few doubt that his international debut is now a matter of when rather than if.
His extraordinary IPL campaign has altered the conversation completely. What began as admiration for a gifted teenager has evolved into a serious selection debate involving some of cricket's biggest names.
For now, the cricket world waits to see whether India's newest batting sensation will be handed the opportunity to showcase his talent on the international stage.
One thing is already clear: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is no longer merely a prospect. He is a player knocking loudly on the door of the Indian team.
