New York: India has sharply rebuked Pakistan for raising the issue of Jammu and Kashmir at a United Nations forum, accusing its neighbor of attempting to politicize an international platform and divert attention from substantive discussions.
Responding to remarks made by the Pakistani delegation, India's representative reiterated New Delhi's long-standing position that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country and remains beyond the scope of international intervention.
“Jammu and Kashmir was, is, and will always remain an internal matter of India,” the Indian delegate said, firmly rejecting Pakistan's references to the region during the proceedings.
India also accused Pakistan of repeatedly misusing multilateral forums to advance what it described as a politically motivated narrative on Kashmir. According to New Delhi, such interventions detract from the primary objectives of international meetings and hinder constructive dialogue on issues of global importance.
The exchange unfolded during a UN discussion where Pakistan reportedly raised concerns related to Jammu and Kashmir while addressing a broader agenda item. India exercised its right of reply to counter the remarks, maintaining that the issue had no relevance to the subject under discussion.
Indian officials emphasized that the constitutional changes introduced in Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019, including the abrogation of Article 370, were sovereign decisions taken by the Indian Parliament and fall entirely within the country's domestic jurisdiction.
New Delhi further asserted that the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral and inalienable parts of India. Officials have consistently maintained that any issues relating to the region must be viewed within the framework of India's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Pakistan, meanwhile, has continued to raise concerns over developments in Jammu and Kashmir at various international forums, arguing that the issue has regional and international implications. Islamabad has frequently called for greater international attention to the matter.
India has repeatedly rejected such attempts, insisting that Jammu and Kashmir is a bilateral matter and that outstanding issues between the two countries should be addressed directly between New Delhi and Islamabad, in line with existing agreements.
The latest diplomatic exchange reflects the continuing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, whose relations have remained strained over a range of issues, including cross-border terrorism, security concerns and the status of Jammu and Kashmir.
Despite periodic engagements at international forums, both countries remain deeply divided on the Kashmir issue, with India maintaining that the matter is strictly internal and Pakistan continuing to seek international attention on the subject.
The sharp rebuttal at the United Nations underscores New Delhi's determination to counter references to Jammu and Kashmir on global platforms and reinforce its position on the region's status.
