New Delhi: Iran has reportedly invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the funeral of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with New Delhi yet to decide whether the Prime Minister or another senior representative will participate in the proceedings.
According to reports, the invitation was conveyed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian as preparations continue for state funeral ceremonies expected to draw leaders and dignitaries from across the world.
Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the Indian government is assessing the invitation and considering the appropriate level of representation. No official announcement has been made regarding Prime Minister Modi's attendance.
The development comes amid a period of heightened international attention on Iran following the death of Khamenei, who served as the country's Supreme Leader for decades and played a central role in shaping its domestic and foreign policies.
India and Iran share longstanding diplomatic, economic and cultural ties. Over the years, the two countries have cooperated on issues ranging from energy security and regional connectivity to trade and strategic infrastructure projects.
Political observers note that attendance at such high-profile state funerals often carries diplomatic significance, providing an opportunity for world leaders to pay respects while engaging in discussions with counterparts from other nations.
The Indian government has traditionally calibrated its participation in major international ceremonies based on diplomatic considerations, scheduling requirements and broader foreign policy priorities. In some instances, the Prime Minister has attended personally, while in others, senior ministers or special envoys have represented the country.
Khamenei's passing marks a pivotal moment in Iran's political history. As Supreme Leader, he held the highest authority in the Islamic Republic and exercised significant influence over national security, foreign policy and key state institutions.
World leaders have continued to send condolences and tributes, recognizing Khamenei's role in regional and global affairs. The funeral is expected to attract representatives from numerous countries, reflecting Iran's geopolitical importance.
Officials in New Delhi have so far remained cautious about commenting publicly on attendance plans. Diplomatic sources suggest that discussions are ongoing and that a decision could be announced closer to the date of the ceremony.
Should Prime Minister Modi attend, it would represent a significant diplomatic gesture and provide an opportunity for high-level engagement with Iranian leadership. If not, India is still expected to ensure representation at an appropriate level in keeping with diplomatic protocol.
For now, the invitation stands, and attention remains focused on New Delhi's final decision regarding participation in one of the most closely watched state ceremonies in the region.
