Supreme Court Clears Way for Shah Rukh Khan's ‘Mannat’ Renovation, Dismisses Plea Against Expansion
In a major relief for Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, the Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition challenging the environmental clearance granted for the renovation and expansion of his iconic sea-facing residence, Mannat, in Mumbai's Bandra.
The apex court's decision effectively upholds the earlier clearance granted by the authorities, paving the way for the long-awaited renovation project to continue without further legal obstacles.
Legal Challenge Comes to an End
The petition had questioned the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance issued for the proposed expansion of Mannat. It also challenged an earlier order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had dismissed objections against the project.
With the Supreme Court refusing to interfere, the renovation project has now received a significant legal boost.
What Changes Are Planned at Mannat?
The renovation proposal includes the addition of two upper floors, increasing the height of the heritage property. Reports indicate the expansion will feature a duplex residential unit connected through an internal staircase, while maintaining compliance with applicable heritage and CRZ regulations.
Mannat, one of Mumbai's most recognisable landmarks, has attracted thousands of fans over the years, many of whom gather outside the residence hoping to catch a glimpse of the actor.
Khan Family Shifted During Renovation
To facilitate the extensive construction work, Shah Rukh Khan, wife Gauri Khan and their children temporarily moved out of Mannat earlier this year. The family is currently staying in a luxury apartment in Mumbai's Pali Hill area while the renovation is underway.
The renovation is expected to take considerable time, given the scale of the project and the heritage status of the property.
Background of the Dispute
The legal challenge stemmed from allegations that the renovation permissions violated environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone norms.
However, both the National Green Tribunal and now the Supreme Court have declined to halt the project, effectively affirming that the approvals granted by the relevant authorities remain valid.
A Landmark Home Set for a New Look
Purchased by Shah Rukh Khan in 2001, Mannat has become one of India's most famous celebrity homes and a popular tourist attraction in Mumbai.
With the Supreme Court's verdict bringing the legal dispute to a close, work on transforming the iconic bungalow into a taller and more modern residence is expected to continue as planned.
