Veteran Tamil actor-director K Bhagyaraj dies at 73 in Chennai

Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj, one of the most influential storytellers in South Indian cinema, passed away in Chennai on Saturday after reportedly suffering a heart attack. He was 73. His death was confirmed after he was brought to Apollo Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Bhagyaraj's passing marks the end of an era in Tamil cinema. Known for his distinctive screenwriting, relatable family dramas and witty dialogues, he carved a niche as a filmmaker whose stories resonated with audiences across generations. Over a career spanning nearly five decades, he worked as a director, actor, screenwriter, producer and composer, earning widespread admiration for his ability to blend humour with emotionally engaging narratives.

Born on January 7, 1953, in Tamil Nadu, Bhagyaraj began his career as an assistant director before making a successful transition to directing and acting. He rose to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s with a string of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films that established him as one of the industry's leading creative forces.

Among his most celebrated works are Mundhanai Mudichu, Andha 7 Naatkal, Darling, Darling, Darling, Chinna Veedu and Idhu Namma Aalu. His films were widely appreciated for their strong characterisation, family-centric themes and clever screenplays, earning him the title of the "Screenplay King" in Tamil cinema.

As an actor, Bhagyaraj appeared in more than 75 films, while as a director he helmed over 25 feature films. His influence extended beyond Tamil cinema, with several of his stories remade in Hindi and other Indian languages, introducing his unique storytelling style to a wider audience.

Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife, actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, son and actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj. The family has yet to announce details regarding his funeral and last rites.

Following news of his demise, tributes poured in from across the Indian film industry. Actors, directors and fans remembered him as a visionary filmmaker whose work shaped modern Tamil cinema and inspired generations of writers and directors. Many described his death as an irreparable loss to Indian cinema.

Bhagyaraj remained active in the entertainment industry until his final years, mentoring young filmmakers and making occasional appearances on screen and television. His contribution to Indian cinema—particularly in screenplay writing and family-oriented storytelling—continues to be regarded as one of the most significant in Tamil film history.
