Four Women, Many Struggles, One Gold: India’s 4x400m Relay Team Wins Asian Games Title

India’s women’s 4x400m relay team produced one of the most memorable performances of the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, winning the gold medal after a race that brought together four athletes with very different journeys.

Kiran Pahal, Prachi Choudhary, M R Poovamma and Vithya Ramraj combined to clock 3:29.69 at Mizuho Park on Tuesday, giving India its first and only gold medal in track and field at these Asian Games.

The victory was significant not only because of the medal but also because of the contrasting stories behind the four athletes. Each member of the quartet arrived at the Asian Games carrying a different personal struggle, ambition and motivation.

Four Athletes, Four Different Journeys

Kiran Pahal’s journey to the athletics track began with resistance. Her decision to pursue sport was not immediately accepted by everyone around her. Her father had to face opposition from an entire village in Sonipat before allowing his daughter to continue pursuing athletics.

For Pahal, running therefore became more than a sporting ambition. It became a way of proving that determination and talent could overcome social expectations and resistance.

Prachi Choudhary also carried a very different dream into Nagoya. The farmer’s daughter from Saharanpur has been working towards a future in the Uttar Pradesh Police, with the ambition of becoming a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Her sporting career and her professional aspirations have developed alongside each other. Before travelling to Nagoya, Choudhary even submitted her measurements for the police uniform, hoping that her athletics success would eventually help her move closer to that dream.

Poovamma’s Road Back

M R Poovamma’s journey has involved some of the most difficult setbacks among the four athletes.

The experienced runner had to rebuild her career after serving a doping ban. She also went through a period of depression, making her return to competitive athletics a significant personal achievement.

With support from her husband and mother, Poovamma gradually rebuilt herself and found her way back to the track.

Her presence in the gold-medal-winning quartet therefore represented more than experience. It was also a reminder of her ability to return after a difficult period and compete again at the highest level.

Vithya Ramraj’s Historic Performance

Vithya Ramraj brought another remarkable story to the relay team.

The daughter of an autorickshaw driver, Ramraj had already created history in Nagoya before stepping onto the track for the relay.

She broke India’s oldest athletics national record during the Asian Games, adding another major achievement to her growing career.

Her performance in the relay then became part of an even bigger team achievement as the quartet successfully completed the race in 3:29.69.

India Reclaims the 4x400m Relay Title

The gold medal was particularly significant because India had lost the women’s 4x400m relay title to China at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou.

This time, the Indian quartet managed to reclaim the crown.

The victory also added another chapter to India’s strong record in the women’s 4x400m relay at the Asian Games. With this victory, India has now won the event seven times in the history of the competition.

The 3:29.69 timing demonstrated the importance of teamwork in a relay event, where individual performances must come together as one coordinated effort.

More Than Just a Gold Medal

For the four athletes, the medal represents different things.

For Pahal, it reflects a journey that began with fighting for the opportunity to run.

For Choudhary, it adds another achievement to a career connected to her dream of joining the police force.
