Rohit Sharma Goes Past 12,000 ODI Runs, Joins Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar in Elite Club

Rohit Sharma added another major milestone to his remarkable ODI career on Wednesday, becoming the third Indian batter to cross 12,000 runs in men's One-Day International cricket.

The India opener reached the landmark during the second ODI against West Indies at the ACA Stadium in Barsapara, Guwahati. With the achievement, Rohit joined Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli in the exclusive group of Indian batters to have scored more than 12,000 ODI runs.

Rohit reached the milestone in his 282nd ODI innings. According to the figures cited in the report, only Virat Kohli reached 12,000 runs faster in terms of innings, having achieved the mark in his 242nd innings.

The milestone came in the 16th over when Rohit took a single off Roston Chase. He continued his innings after reaching the landmark and went on to score his 35th ODI century.

Rohit eventually made 101 runs from only 75 deliveries, producing another aggressive innings at the top of the Indian batting order. His knock included a strong partnership with India captain Shubman Gill.

The two batters put together a huge 255-run opening partnership as India chased a target of 406 set by West Indies. Their stand gave India a dominant platform in what was a high-scoring second ODI.

Rohit's latest achievement adds another statistical milestone to a career that has already included several major ODI records. He is the first player to score three ODI double centuries and remains the only batter to have achieved the feat more than once.

Rohit also holds the record for the highest individual score in men's ODI cricket. He scored 264 from 173 deliveries against Sri Lanka in November 2014, an innings that remains one of the format's most notable batting performances.

The 39-year-old batter made his ODI debut in June 2007 against Ireland. Over the years, he established himself as one of India's most successful limited-overs batters and became a key figure in the team's leadership group.

For several years, Rohit served as Virat Kohli's deputy in India's limited-overs teams before becoming the full-time captain in December 2021.

As captain, Rohit led India during the 2023 ODI World Cup on home soil. India reached the final after an unbeaten run through the tournament but lost to Australia in the title match in Ahmedabad.

Rohit later led India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title. Following the tournament, he retired from T20I cricket alongside Virat Kohli.

He had also taken over as India's Test captain in February 2022. Under his leadership, India enjoyed a period of success in Test cricket, although his Test career eventually came to an end after the 2024 tour of Australia.

Rohit's Test career concluded later in 2024 after a difficult series in Australia. He also dropped himself from the playing XI for the final Test of the series before announcing his retirement from the format.

In ODI cricket, however, Rohit has continued to add to his long list of achievements. His 12,000-run milestone places him alongside two other Indian batting greats, Tendulkar and Kohli.

The achievement also highlights the longevity of Rohit's ODI career. From making his debut in 2007 to reaching 12,000 runs, he has remained a significant part of India's limited-overs cricket for nearly two decades.

His century against West Indies also came during a match in which Shubman Gill produced a major innings of his own. Gill went on to score a double century, while the pair's massive opening stand put India in a commanding position during the chase.

The 12,000-run milestone therefore came during another memorable batting performance from Rohit, adding one more landmark to a career defined by centuries, double centuries, records and major international tournaments.
